Orland Park marks a new year with stories of kindness at Mayor Dan McLaughlin’s annual State of the Village Address on Thursday, March 9. Hosted by the Village of Orland Park, the event is free and open to the public.

The address will be held at the Carl Sandburg High School Performing Arts Center, 13300 South LaGrange Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with a light reception followed by the mayor’s address at 7 p.m.

“Everyone is invited to hear about all that’s been accomplished in Orland Park over the past year,” said Mayor Dan McLaughlin. “I’m happy to again hold the address at Sandburg and I appreciate the many Sandburg students volunteering their time and talents to make this night a success. We’re also happy that the Jerling Junior High Choir will perform.”

McLaughlin’s address will highlight Orland Park’s 2016 milestones and look forward to 2017. Attendees will hear updates on economic development, transportation, public safety, sustainability, the village’s financial stability and more.

The theme for this year’s address is “Orland Park is Kind” and will include honoring the three winners chosen to receive the mayor’s Volunteer of the Year Awards. The community was invited to nominate an Orland Park student, an Orland Park adult and an Orland Park business that exemplified being kind.

In addition to the Volunteer of the Year Awards, the night will include a slideshow of the many stories and photos that were posted to the village’s social media sites with the hashtag #OPKind.

Since November, locals have been sharing their OPKind moments to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Residents, businesses and Orland Park schools participated, posting photos of neighbors shoveling others’ walkways, students packing backpacks to be donated to the homeless and churches rallying around those in need.

“The Volunteer of the Year Awards celebrate those who make a difference. As a village, we wanted to highlight and thank these kind volunteers for using their time and energy to help others,” McLaughlin said. “We are excited to showcase the community’s OPKind stories posted on social media. These small gestures serve as a great reminder of what a wonderful community Orland Park is.”

The evening will begin with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and live music performed by student musicians. The reception includes an art exhibit showcasing pieces created by Orland Park grammar and high school students. The mayor’s address will follow at 7 p.m.

“We hope that many residents and Orland Park businesses join us for what is sure to be a great evening as we celebrate the village’s many milestones from 2016,” McLaughlin said.

Those unable to attend will be able to view the address on the village’s cable television channels on Comcast and U-Verse. It will also be uploaded to the village’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/villageoforlandpark.
