The Village of Orland Park is celebrating autumn. On Saturday, October 4, the village’s Recreation Department will host “The Great Pumpkin Party” at the Centennial Park Warming House, 15600 West Avenue.

“The village’s Pumpkin Party includes many fall traditions from when we were younger --- the hayrides, fall crafts, scarecrow stuffing and Halloween costumes,” said Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin. “It’s a nice afternoon celebrating the season and making some great memories,” he said.

Free and open to all ages, the party will be held from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and will feature a number of activities including hayrides, pony rides, marshmallow roasting, straw prize corral, pie eating contest, scarecrow making, pet costume parade, crafts, sponsor activities, games, dancing and musical entertainment.

“This is a festive event that's sure to be enjoyed by everyone,” said Trustee Pat Gira, chair of the village’s Recreation and Parks Committee.

Scarecrow making will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Participants should bring old clothes to build their scarecrows. Straw, string and a bag for the head will be provided.

The Great Pumpkin Patch will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. inviting attendees to search for the perfect pumpkin. All pumpkins are $2 each and each family is limited to two. Quantities are limited.

The Pet Costume Parade will be held at 4:30 p.m., co-sponsored by Fetch Pet Care. Participants are encouraged to bring their costumed animals for the parade/contest. Prizes will be awarded after the parade for spookiest, most unique, owner/pet look-alike and most trendy.

Bakers Square is co-sponsoring the pie eating contest which will be held at 5 p.m. Three different age groups, eight to 11 years, 12 to 17 and 18 and older, will compete to see who can eat an entire pie the fastest. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each category. Participation is limited and registration will be taken at the event.

Free parking for The Great Pumpkin Party will be available at Centennial Park and at the adjacent Metra Train Station, accessible via 153rd Street.

This Village of Orland Park event is also co-sponsored by Aileen S. Andrew Foundation, Bear Paddle Swim School, Brannigan Chiropractic Center, Cherry Berry Yogurt Bar, Continental Mitsubishi, “D” Construction, Inc., Physicians Immediate Care, PNC Bank, Saint Xavier University and Window Works.
