Open Lands of Orland Park
Open LandsThe Draw of Open Spaces
One of the many reasons people choose Orland Park as the place they want to live is the parks, forest preserves, and open spaces.

In an attempt to preserve some of these open spaces in the village, Mayor Dan McLaughlin and the Board of Trustees formed the Open Lands Fund in November 1995, with the simple goal of improving the quality of life in Orland Park by increasing the amount of open space for present and future generations.

Fund Raising
In addition to public grants and other funding mechanisms, the Village seeks donations from private sources to acquire Open Lands, which are then protected in perpetuity from development.  Open Lands are accessible to the public and offer passive recreational activities such as walking trails.

Objectives
Open Lands' objectives are to acquire land and use other real estate techniques to:
  • Preserve critical and sensitive environmental areas
  • Provide comprehensive linkage between open spaces
  • Add to existing holdings for specific advantages
  • Provide wildlife habitat
  • Provide additional land in already developed areas
  • Improve aesthetic benefits

Orland Park Nature Center proposed Master Plan
Special Meeting Notice

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday March 10, 2015 to discuss the proposed Village of Orland Park Nature Center Master Plan.  The Open House will begin at 6 PM in the Orland Park Village Hall Board Room, 14700 Ravinia Avenue, to display and answer questions on the conceptual draft plan. Village staff  and Open Land Commissioners will be present to discuss the proposal and to answer questions about the Village’s Open Lands program.  A formal presentation of the plan will be made at 7 PM before the Village Plan Commission.  Public participation is welcomed!

The proposed Orland Park Nature Center will be located on the former Pebble Creek Nursery site, located on the east side of Lagrange Road just north of the Metra bridge.  The land was purchased with Open Lands’ funds in 2012, and the Open Lands Commissioners have been working diligently with  consultant ‘Planning Resources Inc.’  to develop ideas for the site. The long term vision is to develop a small nature center with indoor and outdoor learning opportunities and to restore native wildlife and plant communities on the property.  Call 708-403-5300 for more information.
