The Leaf Pick-Up Program generally starts around the middle to the end of October after the leaves begin to fall in Autumn and ends prior to November 30 or on the day before Thanksgiving of each year. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency restricts the disposal of yard waste and the last date for disposal of the yard waste to November 30.
The picking up of leaves depends upon the weather and also upon the volume of leaves in an area along with the travel times to and from the areas to the disposal site. Not all leaves may be able to be picked up on the scheduled day due to the volume or weather. The village will make an effort to collect those leaves on Friday of each week.
Unfortunately, the Vil
lage cannot pick up all of the leaves in all of the subdivisions. The pick up areas are focused to a limited amount of subdivision areas. See the
Leaf Pick-Up Areas to determine if your subdivision is on the list and what day of the week it is on the schedule.
In the subdivisions of the Village that are not on the list of
Leaf Pick-Up Areas, we strongly encourage the use of yard waste wheeler carts from Waste Management or the use of biodegradable bags. If you are in subdivisions that have the leaves picked up, yard waste wheeler carts ensure that the leaves will be picked up.
In those areas that will have leaves picked up, remember when raking leaves, please
do not rake them into the street. Rake leaves into piles within the grass parkway before the edge of the curb. The village's equipment is designed to pick up the leaves from the parkway, not the street pavement or curb.
Raking leaves into the street can cause stormwater inlets to become clogged. Clogged inlets do not allow rainwater to drain properly and will cause flooding. Homes where leaves are found to be piled into the street pavement will be ticketed as appropriate.
You may help the Village in preventing street flooding by joining in the program to
Adopt-an-Inlet and help keep the inlets free of leaves and other debris.
