The village recognizes that an employee's ability to provide professional, quality, and personalized service to the citizens of the Village of Orland Park depends upon them having the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to perform their jobs well.

Department directors are responsible for appraising their employee's performance, counseling, and assisting them in developing their capabilities and skills by providing orientation, on-the-job training, developmental training, and other training.

Overview Centralizing training for cross-organizational training needs is a new initiative for the Human Resources department. We began evaluating cross-organizational needs in July 2016. Beginning October 2016, we are moving forward with systematically rolling-out training to meet the identified training needs. We expect this to continue to grow as cross-functional training needs and quality training resources are identified.

Centralized training information that has been identified to meet the cross-organization needs will be made available here. Employees must receive any required supervisor and/or department director level approvals required to attend any training sessions.

Employees are encouraged to send any feedback on cross-organizational training needs to Human Resources.

Conferences & Seminars Advancing Employees
The village has always advanced the training and professionalism of its staff. With department director's approval, employees authorized to attend conferences, seminars, or other training are required to follow the Authorization to Attend Conferences, Seminars, and Handling of Travel Expenses Policy.

Expense reimbursements may be requested by completing the Travel Authorization and Expense Report.

Tuition Reimbursement Eligibility
Employees who have been employed full-time with the village for a minimum of one year are eligible for tuition reimbursement for classes that are:

  • Related to their positions with the village
  • Taken at a college, university, or technical school

Eligibility for reimbursement is based upon following the Tuition Reimbursement Policy outlined in the employee manual. Union employees should refer to their respective CBA. Tuition Reimbursement Request Form

CPR/AED/FA Training
The Village of Orland Park (VOP) CPR/AED/FA HeartSaver training course is being offered through the Orland Fire Protection District (OFPD) for employees that need to be certified. This course follows the guidelines for CPR and foreign body airway obstruction maneuvers outlined by the American Heart Association.

Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills needed to respond to and manage an emergency until emergency medical services arrives. Skills covered in this course include first aid; choking relief in adults, children, and infants; and what to do for sudden cardiac arrest in adults, children, and infants.

This course teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning of skills.

  • Video-based course ensures consistency
  • Instructor-led, hands-on class format reinforces skills proficiency
  • Course is updated with the new science from the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
Upon successful completion of this training course, employees will receive an American Heart Association 2-Year Certification Card.

Employee Responsibilities
Employees are responsible for ensuring that this required certification is obtained and maintained within their specific position guidelines (ie. 30 days/60 days/90 days/etc.). Employees that are unable to obtain this training requirement or obtain the required bi-annual recertification, may not be able to perform their job duties.

If you are unable to make a scheduled training, you must cancel your registration at least 72 hours prior to the training date. By registering for this course, as an employee you understand you are making a commitment to complete the entire 4-hour training course and if you are a no show, you may be charged the $40 class fee.

Employees should coordinate their participation in this training class with their supervisor and upon completion provide their supervisor a copy of their AHA certification card.

Employees that obtain this certification outside of the Village of Orland Park, should send a valid CPR/AED/FA certification card to or fax 708.349.4859.

Department Training Cost
PLEASE NOTE: Due to budgetary constraints, classes must be filled to max capacity to run.

The training session cost of $40 per trainee will be charged back to the employee's department. OFPD will issue American Heart Association Certification Cards to each employee at the completion of each training. OFPD will provide completion rosters to Human Resources. Human Resources will maintain and provide a master list of required and completed training to departments.
