Eligible Village Residents Must Apply for Property Tax Rebate By December 20

There are an estimated 20,000 Village of Orland Park residents who are eligible for the village's property tax rebate. Just more than half of those --- 12,000 --- have applied for the rebate as of December 7. The last day to apply is Tuesday, December 20, 2016.

Because of the village's strong financial position, the Orland Park Village Board approved a rebate of $2.2 million. Orland Park has returned $38.9 million dollars to village residents since 2003.

"We began rebating property taxes to residents in 2003, and despite a suspension of the program during the economic downturn, we're pleased that the village is again in a strong financial position to offer the rebate," said Mayor Dan McLaughlin.

The village has been rebating a portion of its part of residents' property tax bills 12 of the last 15 years.

"Even though the village's portion of a resident's tax bill is about seven percent, the rebate does give some relief for residents," McLaughlin said. "We're fortunate to be able to offer the rebate using the village's Home Rule Sales Tax collections while continuing to provide a large number of valuable services and projects for village residents," he added.

Eligible village residents have three ways to apply --- online at www.optaxrebate.com; in person at the Village Hall or via US mail by downloading a form or obtaining a blank form at the Village Hall, completing it and mailing it before December 20.

"We are trying to reach village residents every way we can," said Trustee Carole Griffin Ruzich, chair of the village's Finance Committee. "We've run news stories, have pushed heavily on social media, on signs in the community, on television, with literature and recorded phone calls. We hope that those who haven't applied yet will see a reminder and will come in to apply."

On-line and paper applications have been available since October 31. Paper applications are available at the Frederick T. Owens Village Hall at 14700 South Ravinia Avenue; the Recreation Administration Building at 14600 South Ravinia Avenue; the village's Sportsplex at 11351 West 159th Street and at the Orland Park Public Library, 14921 South Ravinia Avenue.
