Summer officially arrives in the Village of Orland Park Memorial Day Weekend.

“The village’s aquatic center debuts for the season and we gather as a community to remember the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” said Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin.

The Village of Orland Park Centennial Park Aquatic Center, at 15600 West Avenue, will begin its 2014 season at noon on Saturday, May 24. Membership information and daily rates can be found in the Recreation Department area of the village’s website at www.orlandpark.org. Details about the kayak and pedal boat rentals available at the adjacent Lake Sedgewick can also be found online.

The Village of Orland Park Veterans Commission will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 26 at 1:00 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the village’s Veterans Memorial at the Orland Park Village Center, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue.

The Mobile Vets Center from the Department of Veterans Affairs will be in the Village Center parking lot on Memorial Day from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. These units serve as offices on wheels to help veterans and their families transition from military to civilian life. VA staff will be present to answer questions and to help veterans apply for VA health benefits.

The names of 15 area veterans have been added to Orland Park’s memorial.

“Veterans whose names are added to Orland Park’s wall may be living or deceased,” McLaughlin explained. “It’s especially touching when a veteran stands as his name is announced and the crowd applauds as his friends and family look on,” the mayor added.

“We have different generations come to our Memorial and Veterans Day Ceremonies,” McLaughlin noted. “It’s important for young people to realize all that our veterans have done to protect the many freedoms we enjoy,” he added.

Members of Orland Park Cub Scout Pack 383 and Boy Scout Troop 383 will serve as an honor guard for the veterans.

Refreshments will be served in the Orland Park Civic Center immediately following the ceremony. For more information, call 708/403-6115.
