Twelve fabulous gardens in the Old Orland/Tuckaway areas, including two businesses and a village owned and maintained garden, will be showcased on Sunday, June 27 at the sixth annual Open Lands of Orland Park Garden Walk. The event is open from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The Garden Walk is dedicated to the late Shirley Fazio, a former Open Lands Commission member and community volunteer.

"The objective of the Open Lands Commission is to preserve open space in the village," explained Village Trustee Kathy Fenton, the Village Board liaison to the commission. "What better way to raise money for open lands than to highlight the many open spaces that have been beautified by Orland Park residents?" she asked.

The tour begins at the Orland Park Civic Center, 14750 South Ravinia where attendees will receive an event program, directions and a wristband to enter the gardens. Light refreshments are included in the ticket price.

Orland Park Community Development Director Bob Sullivan serves as the village staff liaison for Open Lands. "Orland Park's Garden Walk is a benefit for Open Lands which is a good tie-in since private yards are an important form of open space and wildlife habitat," Sullivan said. "Visitors will see a diverse selection of gardens featuring ponds, beautiful plantings and unusual garden decorations," he explained.

"Vendors participating in the boutique portion of the Garden Walk include several of our Farmers' Market vendors, garden and landscape companies and crafters," added Special Events Manager Patty Vlazny. There is no admission fee to shop at the boutique and craft fair.

The Open Lands of Orland Park Garden Walk is co-sponsored by the SouthtownStar, Spaceco, Inc., Speer Financial, and the Aileen S. Andrew Foundation.

The public is invited to support the Open Lands of Orland Park Garden Walk through different levels of patron sponsorships. An Orchid Sponsorship is $100, a Rose Sponsorship is $50 and the Daisy Sponsorship is $25. The names of all patron sponsors will be listed in the event program.

Tickets are $15 per person. Advance tickets are available at the Cashier's Office in the Frederick T. Owens Village Hall, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue. They may also be purchased at Jim Melka's Landscape and Garden Center, 11606 West 179th Street, Mokena, Illinois. Tickets may also be purchased at the event.
