Residents of the Village of Orland Park will again be recognized for exceptional outdoor holiday decorations. The village is sponsoring its third annual Christmas House Decorating Contest, inviting single family homeowners to enter.

Participation in the contest is free and open to residents of single family homes within the corporate limits of the Village of Orland Park. Completed entry forms must be received at the Village Hall by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2010.

"Orland Park's House Decorating Contest has become an annual favorite," said Trustee Kathy Fenton, chair of the village's Special Events and Community Outreach Committee. "Many residents put a lot into their holiday decorating and it's nice to recognize those that add so much to the season," she added.

The five competition categories, including one changed from previous years, include best religious display, most nostalgic, Clark Griswold and Charlie Browniest. New this year is the best entry way/door category, replacing the previous best theme category.

"The best religious, most nostalgic and best entry way are self-explanatory," Fenton noted. "The Clark Griswold Award is named for Chevy Chase's character in the movie ‘Christmas Vacation'," she explained. "For this category, we looking for the holiday decorator that goes above and beyond with lights and decorations," Fenton explained. "We've had family members nominate other family members because of the excessive amount of decorations," she added smiling.

The Charlie Browniest Award is for any building on the resident's property other than the family home. "Participants can decorate their kids' play sets, the shed, doghouse or any structure that is not connected to the main house," Fenton explained. "This category calls to mind Snoopy's doghouse in the Peanuts' Christmas cartoons," she added.

Judging will take place the weekend of Friday, December 10. "Everyone should be sure that their lights are on that weekend," Fenton said. Winners will be honored at a Village Board meeting in early 2011.

Entry forms are available at Orland Park's Frederick T. Owens Village Hall or on the village's website at www.orland-park.il.us. For more information, call 708/403-6140.
