A new addition to the Taste of Orland Park is the village's own Crosstown Classic 16-Inch Softball Game.

It will be east vs west on Saturday, August 6 at 1 p.m. at the John Humphrey Sports Complex, 14700 West Avenue on fields 4 and 5.

Each of the Village Board members has a team with four representing the east side of town and four representing the west side of town.

"We are all looking forward to a fun afternoon with people from all parts of the Orland Park community," said Mayor Dan McLaughlin.

It was Village Clerk John Mehalek who first proposed the contest.

"When we were growing up, 16 inch softball was a big part of our summers," Mehalek said. "I thought it would be fun to add something to Orland Park's summer and to the Taste."

East side teams are being led by Village Clerk John Mehalek, Trustee Kathy Fenton, Trustee Carole Griffin Ruzich and Trustee Mike Carroll.

"We invite everyone to come out, bring their lawn chairs and watch some entertaining 16 inch softball," McLaughlin said. "It will be interesting to see who gets bragging rights until next year."

Teams comprised of residents from the west side of Orland Park will be led by Mayor Dan McLaughlin, Trustee Jim Dodge, Trustee Pat Gira and Trustee Dan Calandriello.

Team members include a cross section of Orland Park residents.

"The players include parents from local sports groups, teachers, school board members, tradesmen, some police and firefighters and community groups," Mehalek said.

Proceeds will benefit Orland Park's veterans.

Orland Park's first Cross Town Classic is sponsored by Rizza Cars, OYA Girls and Boys, Charter Fitness and Charter Cares, Orland Park Soccer Club and Gatto's of Orland Park.
