The Village of Orland Park will celebrate Independence Day on Friday, July 2 and Sunday, July 4. The village's Recreation Department oversees the community's festivities each year, offering events throughout the day.

"Independence Day celebrations in Orland Park go back decades," said Orland Park Village Trustee Kathy Fenton, chair of the village's Community Outreach and Special Events Committee. "Longtime residents may remember when the firemen would set up their display near 151st Street and 94th Avenue, before the malls were built. The firemen would walk along the street, collecting donations from the audience to help pay for the display," she added.

"In the 1980s, the village had manual fireworks at the John Humphrey Complex with people showing up at 8:30 p.m. to see the fireworks and then going home. Now, families plan their July 4th parties around the village's celebration at Centennial Park," Fenton recalled.

Orland Park's Independence Spectacular is held at Centennial Park, 15600 West (100th ) Avenue.

Pet & Bike Parades Plus Liberty Run/Walk
The festivities begin on Friday, July 2 with the village's annual Pet and Bike Parades. Animal owners are invited to costume their favorite dog, cat or stuffed animal for the 5:30 p.m. Pet Parade at the Centennial Park Ice Rink, 15600 West Avenue. Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed dog, cat, most unusual pet and best animal and owner look alikes.

Children are invited to participate in the annual Bike Parade, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Centennial Park Ice Rink. Little ones are invited to decorate their bikes, trikes, big wheels, cars, trucks or wagons to celebrate the spirit of Independence Day. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated in each category. The Bike Parade is sponsored by Advocate Hope Children's Hospital.

Both the Pet Parade and the Bike Parade are free; however, pre-registration is required before June 28 at the Loebe Recreation Center, 14650 South Ravinia Avenue, or at the village's Sportsplex, 11351 West 159th Street.

Orland Park's Liberty Family Fun Run and Walk will be held Friday, July 2, beginning at the 153rd Street Metra Station. Check in begins at 6:00 p.m. with the race beginning at 7:00 p.m. This two mile fun run and one mile fun walk will travel throughout Centennial Park. All participants receive a t-shirt with awards presented to the top overall male and female finisher and the top three finishers in each age group. Post race refreshments and raffles are included.

The cost to participate in the two-mile run is $12.00 for residents and $18.00 for non-residents. To participate in the one-mile walk, the cost is $7.00 for residents and $11.00 for non-residents. Registration is available at the Franklin E. Loebe Recreation Center, 14650 South Ravinia Avenue and at the village's Sportsplex, 11351 West 159th Street. For more information, call the Recreation Department at 708/403-7275.

Recreation Department Facility Administrator Ray Piattoni oversees the Liberty Fun Run/Walk for the village. "We expect about 200 participants, ranging in age from six to over 70," Piattoni said. "The short run distance of two miles and the evening time period make the Liberty Run a terrific event for new and experienced runners to kick off the holiday weekend," he added.

"The walk is a popular event for all ages and is especially enjoyed by the area's many seniors. Everyone enjoys the one mile scenic route through Centennial Park, the t-shirt for participating and the post race raffle with refreshments," Piattoni added.

Pre-registration is not required for the 50 Yard Dash for Kids, held in conjunction with the Liberty Family Fun Run and Walk. Children age four to six are invited to participate in the 7:30 p.m. race, registration for which will be available at the Liberty Run finish line. Prizes will be awarded.

Admission is $6.00 for village residents and $12.00 for non-residents. After 4:00 p.m., residents are $3.00 each and non-residents are $12.00. Members are free.
