Performing comedies has become an autumn tradition for the Village of Orland Park Theatre Troupe with this year's fare being Larry Shue's comedy, "The Nerd."

"The cast and the audience always enjoy our theatre performances because they're very clever and always produce many laughs," said Executive Producer Stephanie Simpson, program supervisor for the village's Recreation Department.

Frann Carnivele-Sidlow is the show's producer, with Jim Mazeika serving as director and Bryan Riess being assistant director.

"This is a wonderfully entertaining show that's perfect for a nice evening out," Carnivele-Sidlow said. "Our cast includes a variety of talented theatre performers who know exactly how to deliver this type of comedy," she added.

The comedy is set in Terre Haute, Indiana in late 1979. Tinley Park's Rob Siebert portrays Willum Cubbert, an aspiring architect and ex-GI whose life was saved by a fellow soldier in Vietnam. Rick Steadman, played by Richard Thompson of Orland Park, is the man who Willum credits with saving his life. Rick turns out to be a socially and intellectually inept "nerd" who outstays his welcome with a vengeance at Willum's residence.

Tansy McGinnis, portrayed by Nicole Coniglio of Orland Park, is Willum's on-again, off-again girlfriend. Sharon Stolarz of Frankfort plays Axel Hammond, Willum's best friend and Tansy's ex; he's also a pompous and sarcastic drama critic.

Orland Park's Reiss Bryan Reiss appears as Warnock Waldgrave who is married to Clelia Waldgrave, portrayed by Kimberly Coniglio-McGarry of Berwyn. Together, the businessman and his high-strung wife have one son named Thor, a rather rambunctious youth who is played by Ryan Wyrobek of Alsip.

"You don't have to go downtown and spend a lot of money for high quality entertainment," Carnivele-Sidlow added. "Enjoying a locally produced show is a great evening out that doesn't break the bank," she said.

Performances at the Orland Park Civic Center, 14700 South Ravinia Avenue, will be Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m. with a Sunday, September 30 matinee at 2:00 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door or reserved seat tickets can be bought at the Recreation Administration Office, 14600 S. Ravinia Avenue. Tickets are $13 for adults, $11 for seniors and $9 for children. For more information, call the Village of Orland Park Recreation Department at 708/403-7275.
